The Harley-Davidson started to became identified when William Harley and Arthur Davidson produced last 1903 the first production of motorcycle. The motorbike was made in a tiny shed wooden with the name Harley-Davidson Motor company on the front door and became the racing bike. After one year they made 3 motorcycles for the public. Harley-Davidson hired their first personnel last 1905 when they won the first race. Three years later, in 1908, Harley-Davidson sold the first motorcycle to be utilized in police service to the Detroit Police Department. They became flourishing that they were able to construct a 6 story factory building and started to export their motorcycles to the Japan.
H-D entered the national racing circuit in 1914 and became named “the wrecking crew”. In 1917, part of the motorcyles they produced were sold the military and was used as military and civilian bikes.
By 1918 half of all bikes made were shipped off to military for service in World War 1, and Corporal Roy Holtz is the first soldier to ride a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle in Germany. H-D became the largest company of motorcycle in 1920. They had over 2000 dealers in 67 countries throughout the world.
1931 is the year that almost all of Harley’s competitors are gone, with the exception of the Indian Motorcycle Company. Harley-Davidson and Indian are the only two motorcycle companies in America, until 1953.
As the world enters into World War 2, so does Harley get back into Military motorcycle construction, and the service school is turned back to the military motorcycle service school, also called the Quartermaster School for military mechanics. This was the time when the public had a difficult time to get hold of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
